10 years of waiting and hoping that the continuation of the star wars story would happen, after being treated to a picture of a cast sitting round reading a script, being surrounded by R2D2's and props from the previous films, we had found a new hopeful feeling...excuse the pun.
Although the Film has it own unique storyline, it also follows closely to the first original star wars film, 'a new hope' the protagonist grows up in the desert, gets accompanied by a cute droid, we get introduced to to a cocky pilot and they have to deliver plans/a message, we discover the force, someone ''important' dies and the film ends with a space station blowing up...
Even if it follows the same standard storyline, and has the same morals, the quality of the film is way, way better than it ever was. The space scenes are smoother, the acting and speech is more realistic. The acting and dialog is thicker, unlike the original films where you follow 2 different storylines, in this star wars story we follow 3 different character paths. So as an audience we know things such as, Finn lying to Rey and we know his lie will catch up with him eventually.
As it has been 10 years since the last proper star wars movie, shives were had when the classic TIE fighter sound appeared, when the lightsaber turned on. But unlike most star wars films, to emphasise the power the antagonist has we seem him stop a ion bolt, retain information from unwilling minds, we actually hear the rumble of sound that the 'force' is making.
We are also given eye pleasure as we see a number of new planets/locations, bursting with new characters and colours, that thicken the plot, the characters not only spend the right amount of time in each location, but the story, as its based in 7 or 8 different locations the pace never slows to a boring pace.
I believe one of the main reasons this film smashed the box office was not only the star wars drought, but also the additional humour, the first remake focused of silly toilet humour with Jar Jar banks, which actually lowered the respect for the prequels, this time the comedy is actually funny as it relates to people of all ages.
I was able to go to the first showing of this film in Dubai, it was a new experience to be in a cinema surrounded by people dressed in cloaks and carrying lightsabers, it was also the first time i have been at a film viewing that people clap at the beginning, parts of the middle and the end. This not only shows what the film meant to people, but also how it wasn't a let down.
