The Invention of Lying

Now, imagine a world where everyone tells the truth, and on one depressing night, to make someones death peaceful you lied....after that you were the only one who lies, but because everyone is honest whatever you say they believe.

The film starts quite funnily, Gervais narrates the intro, making fun of the credits and start the film by declaring what going on: people can't lie and thats there nature, they don't know how to, everything else is the same. We see the first scene entailing Ricky's character (Mark) about to go on a date. Its funny but kind of seems like one of the higher points in the film.

We then see Mark tell his first lie we have hope for the film, sadly this is where the film ends with the comedy. As the plot thickens we begin to realise that its somewhat a mock of religion, in the sense that people who truely follow a specific idol will believe its every word, so be warned around halfway through he film it turns from a quick paced joking comedy, into a preaching and romantic movie, that slowly covers the interesting story idea.

The style the film is done, makes most scene look straight out of an old english TV show, as the angles are bland and dreary. Which is true to the moral of the film, its about discovery and wonder, the light is used to show how depressing areas in the film are, for example the corridor where Ricky and Jonah's characters mainly talk is lit using two square panels on the ceiling, similar to what is found in offices: unlike the scene where Ricky's character finds fortune or is experimenting with this new power where the scene is lit up.

The score consists of 5 primarily english popular songs in the 70's, which fits the films setting. This songs also set a mood for the audience to follow, like we hear Mr Blue Sky in the scene where Ricky gets up, it contrast well with the boring get up and get ready the the character does every morning.

Personally i find Ricky Gervais a funny comedian but i don't think he should of gone into filmmaking, he in the past had made award winning tv shows such as Extra's and The Office. Different people different opinions but personally i think the idea behind this film could be easily expanded and made into quite an interesting plot, but i feel like Gervais made the film to religious-esk.
