Honestly, I didn't enjoy City of God, this could be because I don't find drama/crime interesting, it could be because I don't know Brazil, to me I would understand a crime drama set in England, as I was brought up there and I know about life in England, but it was not.
It was hard to remember all the names of the different characters, I remember rocket, carrot and Willian, but thats about it, I understand how the film is regarded a classic now, but that doesn't mean to me I would call it a classic.
On the positive side I will respect the cinematography and the colours used, the emotions portrayed but the actors could be considered real, the harsh plot line is very true to life and could be interpreted as more like a document of life in Brazil.
The plot does make sense, the dual stories work well, the whole circle of life, 'how everyone will meet up because life works in mysterious ways' William Blake.
As a foreigner, all I know Brazil as is the football capitol of the world, home to the Zika virus, but one of the more important things to them is cooler, this shows in the racial sense in the film, as well as the way the film is edited giving sharp lighting cues whenever different emotions are being shown.
